Nice striker Terem Moffi has been called up to replace Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface in Super Eagles’ squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. Boniface picked up a groin injury in training and has been ruled out of the tournament.
The 23-year-old striker is expected to be side-lined for up to six weeks, and will now fly back to Germany to begin treatment on the injury. Boniface has scored 16 goals with eight assists in all competition for the Bundesliga leaders this season.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will now await the approval of the African football governing body, CAF to register Moffi for the AFCON. Moffi has registered six goals with two assists in all competitions for Nice this season, and has scored four goals in 12 appearances for the three-time African champions.
Nigeria will compete in Group A of this year’s AFCON with host country Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The Super Eagles will lock horns with Equatorial Guinea in their first game on January 14th at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé. The kickoff is 3pm Nigerian Time.
