Jose Peseiro has confirmed he has been contacted by the Algeria Football Federation to be the new head coach of the country’s national team.
The Portuguese led the Nigeria to win silver medal at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, and his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has since expired after the AFCON.
The Desert Foxes of Algeria are searching for a new coach following the sacking of Djamel Belmadi couple of weeks ago after failing to progress beyond the group stage of the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
“I received a lot of offers after the African Cup final. I received an offer from the FAF but I will first rest and my agent will take care of it.” Peseiro said on a TV show.
According to an Algerian publication, DZ Foot, the president of the Algerian football federation, Walid Sadi, has been seduced by Peseiro’s credentials and had a chat with the Portuguese coach on taking over their national team job.
Algeria won the AFCON in 2019, beating Nigeria in the semi-finals. However, the North Africans failed to make it past the group stage of the 2021 and 2023 editions, and are yet to win a game at the AFCON since 2019.
Peseiro’s contract with the NFF expired at the conclusion of the AFCON, but it is not yet clear if the football governing body is willing to extend it. The 63-year-old was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in May 2022, and has won 11 of his 22 games in charge.
