Super Falcons of Nigeria played out a goalless draw against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the first leg, third round of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers on Friday in Douala.
The game saw the return of Nigeria head coach Randy Waldrum back to the team after the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons are seeking a first Olympic qualification since the 2008 games in Beijing. The Falcons have since failed to qualify for three consecutive editions in 2012, 2016, and 2020.
In Friday’s tie, the Falcons thought they had opened the scoring in the 54th minute only for substitute Jennifer Echegini’s effort ruled out for offside. And in the 64th minute, Echegini set up Asisat Oshoala on the edge of the box but her effort was well saved by the Cameroonian keeper.
The second leg of the encounter will go down in Abuja on Monday, 26 February, and the winner over the two legs will face either South Africa or Tanzania in the final qualifying round.
The Bayana Bayana of South Africa look good to progress into the final round after beating Tanzania 3-0 away from home on Friday.
