Bayer Leverkusen became the first Bundesliga team to finish a league season unbeaten after a 2-1 win over Augsburg on Saturday, as their dream of an ‘invincible treble’ remained alive.
Having wrapped up the title several weeks ago, the final league match of the season was always set to be a joyous occasion for Xabi Alonso’s men in front of their home fans, and they did not disappoint.
In a party-style atmosphere at the BayArena, the hosts took the lead through Victor Boniface inside 12 minutes and then doubled their advantage 15 minutes later thanks to Robert Andrich.
Augsburg briefly threatened a comeback in the second half when Mert Komur pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute, but Leverkusen held on to secure their historic achievement.
Leverkusen season-long unbeaten run is now at 51 games in all competitions – already breaking a 59-year-old Uefa record – and two more wins will secure a remarkable treble.
The German champions will lock horns with Atalanta in the Europa League final in Dublin on Wednesday, followed by the German Cup final against second-tier Kaiserslautern three days later.
Leverkusen have surpassed the 49-game unbeaten run Portuguese giants Benfica enjoyed between 1963 and 1965.
The Xabi Alonso’s tram had never won a league title in their 120-year history prior to this season, but they romped away with the Bundesliga this time around, finishing on 90 points from 34 matches, with 28 wins and six draws.
Across these matches, Leverkusen scored 89 goals and conceded just 24 times, highlighting their dominance. They finished 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart, who overtook Bayern Munich in the table on the final day.
