Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the final of the UEFA Champions League on Saturday to win the trophy for the 15th time at Wembley.
Second-half goals from defender Dani Carvajal and forward Vinicius Jr see off a brave Borussia Dortmund who dominated the larger part of the game.
The German side hit the post and created two more big chances in the first half as they threatened a big upset, but Real have a unique relationship with this competition and with an improved display after the break finally came to life.
Toni Kroos – in his final game for the club – set up the opener with a corner for Carvajal to head in the 74th minute, while Jude Bellingham set up Vinicius Jr for the second goal with seven minutes to play.
Niclas Fullkrug thought he’d set up a big finish with a headed finish in added time of the game, but was flagged offside and Dortmund’s hopes of an unlikely comeback all but ended there.
Real Madrid have now won the European Cup/Champions League trophy more than twice as many times as any other team: 15 – Real Madrid; 7 – AC Milan; 6 – Liverpool, Bayern Munich.
While Carlo Ancelotti wrote more history with his fifth win as coach in the competition. The only coach to win more than three Champions League titles.
