The Super Falcons of the Nigeria have been knocked out of the women’s football event of the ongoing Olympics in Paris, after a 3-1 defeat to Japan in their last group game on Wednesday.
Chelsea’s Maika Hamano put the Japanese ahead in the 22nd minute, and Mina Tanaka doubled the lead 10 minutes later.
Juventus’ Onyi Echegini reduced the deficit for Nigeria three minutes before halftime, but Hikaru Kitagawa scored the third goal for the Asian side in the added minutes of the first half.
The Randy Waldrum-led team needed an outright win to stand a chance of progressing into the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. However, they finished bottom of the group with no point, having lost their previous two group games to Brazil and Spain.
