Ex-international Augustine Eguavoen is in line to take charge of the Super Eagles for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to appoint a new head coach for the Super Eagles, after Finidi George resigned his appointment in June.
According to a reliable source at the NFF, it’s impossible to employ a new head coach for the Super Eagles before the games against Benin and Rwanda. The source further said Eguavoen, who is currently the technical director of the NFF, is in line to manage the team for the two games.
The source told Complete Sports, “The whole thing is quite messy at the moment. It’s unfortunate that we don’t have a coach in place less than a than a few weeks before the AFCON qualifiers.
“As things stand now, the only option is for Eguavoen to lead the team in interim capacity for the two games.
“It is something the NFF is considering at the moment, and it is the only viable option.”
The Super Eagles will begin the 2025 AFCON qualifiers with a game against neighbouring Benin Republic at home on September 7 and will fly to Kigali to lock horns with Rwanda three days later.
It would be recalled that Eguavoen led the Super Eagles in interim capacity at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, winning all three group matches, but were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Tunisia.
