In Germany, Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface opened his goals account for the new season as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Stuttgart to win a their first-ever German Super Cup title on Saturday night. Boniface gave Leverkusen the lead in the 11th minute, but the game ended 2-2 at regulation time. However Xabi Alonso’s team won the game on penalties. Also in action was Nathan Tella who made the starting 11 alongside Boniface.
In Scotland, Cyriel Dessers came off the bench to score one goal and assist another, in Rangers’ Scottish league cup second round victory over St Johnstone on Saturday. The Nigerian striker fired Rangers in front in the 58th minute, and then set up Ross McCausland to double the lead in the closing stages of the game.
In England, Super Eagles stars Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were in action for Fulham who lost 1-0 to Manchester United in the first game of the 2024/25 Premier League season on Friday night. Both Super Eagles players played for the entire duration of the game.
Frank Onyeka was in action for Brentford who kicked off the new Premier League season with a 2-1 home win against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon. Onyeka came on in the 84th for Yoane Wissa, who scored the winner for Brentford.
At St. James’ Park Super Eagles midfielder, Joe Aribo was in action before going off in the 70th minute as newly promoted Southampton lost 1-0 to Newcastle United on Saturday.
The duo of Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi were in action for Nottingham Forest in their 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday. Aina who started the game was later replaced in the 54th minute with a knock, while Awoniyi came on in the 72nd minute.
In France, Nigerian striker Akor Adams was in action for Montpellier as they played out a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg in Sunday’s Ligue 1 game. Akor gave a good account of himself, as he won a penalty for Montpellier’s equaliser before he was substituted 10 minutes from time.
Super Eagles winger, Moses Simon was in action for Nantes in their goalless draw with Toulous in Sunday’s Ligue 1 game. The Nigerian international played for 75th minutes, and was replaced by Mostafa Mohamed after an impressive display from the wing.
In Italy, Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was in goal for Udinese who opened the new Serie A campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Bologna on Sunday. Riccardo Orsolini gave Bologna the lead in the 57th minute after beating Okoye from the penalty spot. But Lautaro Giannetti equalized for Udinese 11 minutes later, as both teams had a share of the spoils.
Also in action for Udinese was Kingsley Ehizibue while Isaac Success was not in action due to thigh injury.
Samuel Chukwueze was in action for AC Milan who came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Torino, in their opening game in the Serie A on Saturday. The Nigerian international was was replaced by Theo Hernandez in the 60th minute.
In another Serie A game, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen was not included in Napoli’s squad as they lost 3-0 away to Hellas Verona. The future of Osimhen isn’t clear yet, but he’s expected to leave the former Serie A club this summer after handing in a transfer request.
In Belgium, Tolu Arokodare scored two goals for Genk in their 4-3 away win over Beerschot on matchday 4 of the Belgian Jupiler on Saturday. Arokodare has now scored in three consecutive league games this season and also taken his tally to four goals in the Belgian topflight.
