Hervé Renard, a two-time Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach, revealed that he nearly became the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
Renard, who has previously coached Ivory Coast and Zambia, shared that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) approached him after coach Finidi George resigned in May.
Despite receiving the most lucrative offer of his career from the NFF, Renard ultimately declined after careful consideration. “I almost went to Nigeria. I weighed the pros and cons for several days, even weeks, before deciding against it. It was the best offer I’ve had, but it didn’t feel right in the end,” he told French outlet L’Équipe.
Renard is notably the first coach to win the Africa Cup of Nations with two different teams, having led Zambia to victory in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015. He also managed Morocco during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
