Burkina Faso and Cameroon have officially qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two rounds of qualifying matches still to go, marking an impressive achievement for both nations.
Burkina Faso was the first to secure their spot after a solid 2-0 away win over Burundi on Sunday. The Stallions’ victory ensures them a top-two finish in Group L, having already accumulated 10 points from their first four matches. Mohamed Konate opened the scoring early in neutral Abidjan, while Bertrand Traore, the former Aston Villa star now playing for Ajax, sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty.
Cameroon followed suit, earning their place in the tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory against Kenya in Kampala. Boris Enow’s 63rd-minute strike was enough to secure three points for the Indomitable Lions, who now sit comfortably at the top of Group J with 10 points. This guarantees their qualification, as they will finish above Kenya on a head-to-head basis.
Both Burundi and Kenya were forced to play their home matches in Ivory Coast and Uganda, respectively, due to a lack of suitable stadiums for international football in their own countries.
In addition to Burkina Faso and Cameroon, several other nations—including Algeria, Angola, DR Congo, Egypt, and Ivory Coast—could also clinch their spots by the end of this week’s fourth round of qualifiers.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to kick off on December 21, 2025, with the final set for January 18, 2026. Football fans across the continent eagerly await the competition, which will be hosted in Morocco.
