Chelsea continued their strong start to the season with a win over Newcastle, thanks to a key performance from Cole Palmer. Palmer’s goal—his seventh of the season—came just after halftime, firing a precise shot from inside the penalty area that slipped past Nick Pope at his near post.
The Blues got on the scoreboard early, with Nicolas Jackson finding the net in the 18th minute. Jackson’s fifth league goal was set up by a crisp pass from Palmer, which allowed Pedro Neto to square the ball back for Jackson to finish with ease. But Newcastle were quick to respond, leveling the score 14 minutes later when Alexander Isak found an opportunity for a tap-in.
The Magpies had a chance to snatch another goal toward the game’s end when Isak rounded Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. However, his attempt to ease the ball over the line was stopped by quick defensive work from Chelsea, leaving Newcastle frustrated.
In the closing moments, Chelsea looked to have won a penalty after Christopher Nkunku went down in the box. Referee initially awarded the penalty, but after video review, it was reversed as replays showed Nkunku slipping rather than being fouled.
Ultimately, Palmer’s seventh goal in just nine Premier League appearances was enough to secure Chelsea’s three points and elevate them to fourth in the table. This position might shift to fifth depending on Arsenal’s result against Liverpool later in the day, but Chelsea’s impressive form under new manager Enzo Maresca is evident. With five wins from nine league games and only two losses to title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool, Chelsea fans have plenty to be optimistic about.
On the other hand, Newcastle’s struggles continue. Sitting 12th in the standings, they have now gone five league games without a victory, leaving manager Eddie Howe searching for ways to break their winless streak.
