The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially announced Enugu State as the host of the 23rd National Sports Festival. The decision, made during the NSC’s top management meeting, highlights Enugu’s successful bid to host the prestigious event.
Known as the Coal City State, Enugu’s selection is historic, as this will be the first time the South-Eastern state will host the festival since its inception in 1973. The state has pledged to deliver a world-class event that will showcase the spirit of sportsmanship and unity that the festival represents.
The National Sports Festival, held biennially, serves as Nigeria’s largest multi-sport gathering, bringing together thousands of athletes from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. It is a celebration of national unity and sporting excellence, and its upcoming editions are set to uphold this rich tradition.
Before Enugu takes the spotlight, the 22nd edition of the festival is scheduled to take place in January 2025 in Ogun State. As preparations ramp up, the Gateway State is already buzzing with anticipation, promising a spectacular showcase of talent and culture.
Honourable Bukola Olopade, a former Local Organizing Committee chairman and now the NSC Director General, shared insights into Ogun State’s plans. The 2025 Gateway Games are expected to host over 15,000 athletes, a testament to the festival’s growing scale. Olopade reaffirmed the NSC’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ogun in delivering a premium experience for athletes and spectators alike.
Reflecting on the event’s history, the 21st edition was hosted by Asaba, Delta State, where over 11,000 athletes participated in a grand celebration of sports. With Enugu and Ogun poised to carry the torch forward, the National Sports Festival continues to serve as a powerful platform for fostering unity and showcasing Nigeria’s rich sporting talent.
