West Ham United has confirmed that striker Michail Antonio is in a stable condition and “conscious and communicating” after being involved in a car crash on Saturday afternoon.
The club released a statement later that evening, sharing that Antonio is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital. They also urged fans and the media to respect the privacy of the player and his family during this challenging time.
“At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family,” the club stated. “The club will make no further comment this evening but will issue a further update in due course.”
The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reported that the accident occurred in Epping around 1:02 pm. Firefighters worked to free a man trapped in his car, completing the rescue by 1:45 pm.
“Crews were called this afternoon after reports of a road traffic collision involving one car,” said the Fire and Rescue Service. “The casualty was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.”
Essex Police have since launched an investigation into the crash, which involved a Ferrari, and are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage to help with their inquiries.
In an earlier statement, West Ham expressed their support for the 34-year-old forward, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Michail, his family, and friends.”
Antonio, who has been with the club since 2015 after joining from Nottingham Forest, has been a key player for the Hammers, scoring 68 goals in 268 league appearances. He also represents Jamaica at the international level.
West Ham is set to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next Premier League match on Monday at 20:00 GMT. While Antonio’s involvement is undoubtedly uncertain, the club and its supporters will undoubtedly rally behind him as he recovers.
