Nigerian club Enyimba FC delivered a statement performance in the CAF Confederation Cup, defeating Mozambican side Black Bulls 4-1 on Sunday. The emphatic victory marked a return to form for the two-time African champions, as they reignited their hopes of advancing from Group D despite remaining bottom of the table.
Joseph Atule was the star of the match, scoring twice, including the opener and the final goal. His performance was complemented by Ifeanyi Ihemekwele and former Nigerian international Brown Ideye, who both found the net. The victory was a marked improvement for Enyimba, who had managed just two goals in their previous five qualifying and group-stage matches.
The Black Bulls’ lone goal came from Nigerian forward Ejaita Ifoni, who briefly equalized before Ihemekwele restored Enyimba’s lead to 2-1 by halftime. From there, the Nigerian side never looked back, delivering a commanding second-half display.
Enyimba’s turnaround comes on the heels of a coaching change last month. Following a string of disappointing results—including a 3-0 loss to Black Bulls in Maputo—the club appointed veteran coach Stanley Eguma to replace Yemi Olarenwaju. Eguma’s influence was evident in Sunday’s game, with the team displaying newfound confidence and cohesion.
Next Sunday, Enyimba will host Al Masry in Uyo, in what promises to be a thrilling showdown. The Nigerian side will be seeking to avenge their 2-0 defeat to Masry in North Africa last November. A win would not only bolster their qualification hopes but also restore confidence as they push for continental glory.
The Group D standings remain tight, with Zamalek of Egypt leading the pack on eight points following a 0-0 draw with Al Masry in Alexandria. Masry are second with five points, while Black Bulls and Enyimba are tied on four points. With two games left, the group remains wide open, and every point will be crucial.
The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stages.
