Eric Sékou Chelle has expressed his excitement at taking on the role of head coach for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, calling it an opportunity he couldn’t turn down.
The Malian tactician was officially named as the substantive head coach of the three-time African champions earlier this week, stepping into one of the most prestigious coaching roles on the continent. Chelle leaves his position as head coach of Algerian club MC Oran to begin this new chapter.
The 47-year-old bid farewell to MC Oran on a high note, guiding his team to a 1-0 victory over ES Setif in the Algeria Cup on Saturday. Reflecting on his departure, Chelle shared his gratitude for the time spent with the club and its fans.
“I thank the Hamraoua fans, the inhabitants of Oran, and all Algerians for their warm welcome and support,” Chelle said during a post-match media interaction. “MC Oran will always have a special place in my heart.”
Chelle also confirmed that his journey with the club had officially come to an end, paving the way for his new role in Nigeria. “This is my last match with MC Oran, marking the end of my adventure here. Starting Monday, I will be in Nigeria to begin a new chapter. The MCO officials wanted me to stay, but one cannot refuse to lead one of the best teams in Africa and the world.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to officially unveil Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles on Monday, January 15, at the Media Conference Room of the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., offering fans and stakeholders a chance to meet the man tasked with leading the Super Eagles to new heights.
