Southampton finally ended their long wait for a Premier League victory with a dramatic late goal from Paul Onuachu, sealing a crucial 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Ipswich. The Saints’ triumph at Portman Road marks their first league win since November and brings an end to a dismal run of six consecutive defeats.
Despite the much-needed victory, Southampton remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just nine points from 24 matches. However, this result also represents a significant milestone—it is the first time they have taken three points since Ivan Jurić took charge on December 21.
The visitors made an encouraging start, breaking the deadlock in the first half when Joe Aribo’s bouncing first-time effort caught Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric off guard. But their lead was short-lived, as Liam Delap equalized before the break, sprinting past Saints captain Jan Bednarek and slotting a composed finish past Aaron Ramsdale.
In a largely uneventful second half, Ipswich had chances to snatch a winner through Omari Hutchinson, Julio Enciso, and Delap, but they failed to capitalize. Then, in the dying moments of the game, substitute Kamaldeen Sulemana’s shot was parried by Muric, allowing Nigerian forward Onuachu to pounce and tap in the rebound—securing a vital three points for Southampton.
While they still face an uphill battle for survival, this long-overdue victory could provide the spark needed to turn their season around.
