Nigeria’s journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another setback as the Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Fresh off a convincing 2-0 win over Rwanda, the Super Eagles entered the match eager to build momentum in their qualification campaign. Dominating possession from the start, Nigeria created several early chances but struggled to break down a disciplined Zimbabwean defense.
After sustained pressure, the breakthrough finally came in the 74th minute when Victor Osimhen connected with Ola Aina’s pinpoint cross, heading the ball into the net to give Nigeria a well-deserved lead. However, their advantage was short-lived. A lapse in concentration at the back nearly proved costly, with Zimbabwe striking the crossbar before finally finding the equalizer in stoppage time. Substitute Tawanda Chirewa delivered the gut-punch goal, ensuring Zimbabwe left Uyo with a crucial point.
With this result, Nigeria now sits fourth in Group C with seven points from six games—six points behind group leaders South Africa, who have 13. The Super Eagles will have a chance to revive their qualification hopes when they host Rwanda in September
