Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have secured a spot in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and, with it, a place at this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. The thrilling quarter-final clash against defending champions Senegal ended in dramatic fashion, with Nigeria emerging victorious via a penalty shootout.
Held at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia Egypt, the match proved to be a tightly contested affair. Both teams failed to break the deadlock through regular and extra time, pushing the encounter into a tense penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt was the star of the show, pulling off two crucial saves during the shootout. His heroics between the posts helped Nigeria clinch a 3-1 win on penalties, after all three of the Flying Eagles’ opening spot kicks found the back of the net. Senegal, on the other hand, missed two of their first three and saw their fourth attempt crash against the crossbar, sealing their fate.
This victory not only propels Nigeria into the semi-finals but also guarantees their participation in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, marking their 14th appearance at the global tournament since their debut in 1983.
The Flying Eagles, seven-time African champions, will now set their sights on lifting the continental trophy once again.
