Nigeria’s Super Falcons continued their impressive run of form on Sunday with a commanding 3-1 victory over arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Queens in a closed-door friendly played in Casablanca, Morocco. The match formed part of their final preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which kicks off next month.
The nine-time African champions took charge early, with Chiwendu Ihezuo opening the scoring in the 34th minute. Star striker Asisat Oshoala doubled the lead from the penalty spot just before halftime, while team captain Rasheedat Ajibade added a third five minutes into the second half.
Although Ghana’s Evelyn Badu thought she had pulled one back, her effort was ruled out for offside. The Black Queens eventually managed a consolation goal through Alice Kusi, who converted a late penalty in the 88th minute.
The win means the Super Falcons are now unbeaten in their last three matches, netting five goals and conceding just once in that run. Head coach Justin Madugu will be pleased with the team’s momentum as they shift focus to WAFCON 2025, scheduled from July 5 to 26 in Morocco.
Nigeria, placed in Group B, will open their campaign on July 6 against Tunisia, followed by a match against Botswana on July 9. They will wrap up their group stage fixtures with a clash against Algeria on July 13.
Fans will be eager to see if the Super Falcons can reclaim continental glory, having last lifted the WAFCON title in 2018 after a dramatic penalty shootout win over South Africa.
