Footballer Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, according to the Metropolitan Police. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022.
The charges relate to three women: two counts of rape involve one woman, while three additional counts of rape are connected to a second woman. A further sexual assault charge involves a third woman.
Partey’s contract with Arsenal, where he has played since 2020, ended on Monday. The Ghanaian midfielder was signed from Atletico Madrid for £45.3 million and made 130 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring nine goals.
The police investigation began in February 2022, following an initial report of rape. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation, stated:
“Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.”
Partey is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 5 August.
