In a match that will go down as one of the most dramatic in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations history, Nigeria’s Super Falcons roared back from a two-goal deficit to snatch a sensational 3–2 victory over Morocco on Saturday night.
The North Africans came out flying, with Ghizlane Chebbak opening the scoring in the 12th minute. Things got even worse for Nigeria when Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled Morocco’s lead in the 24th, sending home fans into a frenzy and putting the Super Falcons on the ropes.
But champions rise in the face of adversity, and Nigeria showed exactly why they’re the most decorated team on the continent. Esther Okoronkwo sparked the comeback with a coolly converted penalty in the 64th minute, breathing life into the Nigerian side. Just seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi brought the game level, setting up a nerve-wracking finale.
And in the 88th minute, up stepped Jennifer Echegini with the decisive blow — a late winner that broke Moroccan hearts and sealed Nigeria’s place back on top of African women’s football.
With the 3–2 triumph, the Super Falcons claimed their 10th WAFCON crown, their first since 2018, and became the first team to lift the newly designed WAFCON trophy. To top it off, they’ll return home $1 million richer.
