Nottingham Forest have appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new manager following the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo. The decision comes just three games into the new Premier League campaign, with Nuno’s 21-month tenure ending late Monday night.
Postecoglou returns to management just three months after his short-lived spell at Tottenham came to an end. While Spurs endured a nightmare Premier League season under the Australian — finishing 17th with just 38 points — he did deliver a historic Europa League triumph, ending the club’s long trophy drought with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
Speaking about the appointment, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis praised the 60-year-old’s pedigree:
“We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies. His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey.”
Forest currently sit 10th in the table after three games, but the atmosphere around the City Ground has been tense. Nuno’s final match was a 3-0 defeat to West Ham, and whispers of a strained relationship with Marinakis and global sporting director Edu had been growing louder in recent weeks.
Despite that, Nuno leaves with credit for guiding Forest to their best league finish in nearly three decades last season — seventh place and European qualification.
Now, the focus shifts to Postecoglou, who becomes the eighth permanent manager since Marinakis took over in 2017. His first test is a trip to Arsenal this Saturday.
