Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, added another chapter to her glittering career on Monday as she won silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 28-year-old, who made history in 2022 as world champion and world record holder, clocked 12.29s in a thrilling final. She finished just behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who powered through with a personal best of 12.24s to secure Switzerland’s first-ever world title in the event.
Amusan had looked unstoppable in the semi-finals, breezing through her heat in 12.36s and raising hopes of a successful title defense. In the final, she got off to her trademark sharp start but couldn’t hold off Kambundji’s late surge.
This latest medal brings Nigeria’s tally at the World Championships to 12 overall, with Amusan now joining track legends Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume as one of the few Nigerians to win multiple medals on the global stage.
Her silver in Tokyo follows her unforgettable triumph in Eugene in 2022, where she set the still-standing world record of 12.12s. With this performance, Amusan continues to cement her place as one of Africa’s greatest athletes and a true icon of Nigerian sport.
