Nigerian champions Remo Stars made the perfect start to their 2025/26 CAF Champions League campaign, cruising past Comorian side US Zilimadjou with a commanding 4-0 victory in Abeokuta on Sunday.
It didn’t take long for Daniel Ogunmodede’s men to stamp their authority on the contest. In the 12th minute, centre-back Leonard Ngenge pounced on a defensive lapse to slot home the opener and set the tone for a dominant evening. The Sky Blue Stars doubled their advantage just before halftime, thanks to Ebuka Anthony, whose composed finish left the visitors chasing shadows.
After the break, the Nigerian champions continued to pile on the pressure. A brilliant cross from Ibrahim Abubakar found Malian forward Adama Goita, who rose highest to nod in the third goal in the 67th minute. Ten minutes from time, substitute Samson Olasupo capped off the rout with a neat finish to seal a four-star performance.
Playing away from their traditional Ikenne base due to renovation work, they will use Abeokuta’s MKO Abiola Stadium for both legs of the tie, an unusual but favourable advantage.
Should Remo Stars complete the job, they will set up a blockbuster clash in the second round against Mamelodi Sundowns, the South African giants and perennial title contenders.
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s other representative, Rivers United, had a tougher start, grinding out a 0-0 draw away to FC Les Aigles du Congo in Kinshasa on Saturday. The Port Harcourt club will now look to make home advantage count in the return leg.
