It was a disappointing evening for Nigerian football fans as both Kwara United and Abia Warriors were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday.
At the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Kwara United, popularly known as The Harmony Boys, fell 1-0 to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko. The decisive moment came just nine minutes into the second half when Hubert Ayau pounced on a loose ball inside the box to fire home the winning goal. That strike sealed the Porcupine Warriors’ victory, handing them a 5-3 aggregate win and ending Kwara United’s continental journey at the first preliminary round.
Nigeria’s other representative, Abia Warriors, suffered a similar fate. Facing Malian side Djoliba, the Warriors fell 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate, bringing their CAF Confederation Cup campaign to an early close as well.
With both clubs exiting at this stage, Nigeria’s hopes in this season’s competition have been dashed much earlier than anticipated.
