Rivers United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Black Bulls of Mozambique in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second-round clash on Saturday. The decisive moment came just five minutes into the second half when Moctar Diallo found the back of the net for the hosts.
The Port Harcourt-based side will now look to overturn the deficit when they host the Mozambican champions at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo next Sunday. A victory by a sufficient margin will see Rivers United advance to the lucrative group stage of Africa’s premier club competition.
Meanwhile, it was a tough weekend for Nigeria’s other representative, Remo Stars, who suffered a heavy 5-1 home defeat to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday. Both teams now face uphill battles as they aim to keep Nigeria’s hopes alive on the continental stage.
