Nigeria kicked off their pursuit of a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) crown with a determined 2–1 victory over Tanzania in challenging, rain-soaked conditions in Fes.
The Super Eagles made their early dominance count in the 35th minute when Semi Ajayi rose highest to power home a header from an inch-perfect Alex Iwobi corner, giving Nigeria a deserved lead. Eric Chelle’s men controlled much of the first half and looked poised to extend their advantage before the interval, but Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Foba produced a fine save to tip Samuel Chukwueze’s deflected strike over the crossbar.
Nigeria thought they had doubled their lead moments after the restart when Victor Osimhen found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review. That decision seemed to spark Tanzania into life, and they drew level in the 50th minute as Charles M’Mombwa calmly side-footed home a lofted delivery from Novatus Miroshi on the left.
The parity was short-lived. Just two minutes later, former African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead in spectacular fashion. The forward showed great composure and skill, shifting the ball onto his left foot before unleashing a thunderous strike into the top-right corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
The crucial goal secured all three points for the Super Eagles and set the tone for their Afcon campaign. Nigeria will now aim to book an early place in the round of 16 when they take on Tunisia in their next Group C match in Fes on Saturday. Meanwhile, Tanzania will look to bounce back as they head to Rabat for an all–East African showdown against Uganda.
