Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered another statement performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, cruising into the semi-finals with a deserved 2–0 victory over Algeria on Saturday at the Stade de Marrakech. The win sets up an exciting last-four showdown against tournament hosts Morocco, who edged Cameroon in their quarter-final encounter.
Coming off a ruthless 4–0 demolition of Mozambique in the Round of 16, the Super Eagles arrived full of confidence—and with goals to spare. Nigeria had already racked up an impressive 12 goals in four matches, the highest tally in the competition. Algeria, by contrast, entered the quarter-final unbeaten and defensively disciplined, having conceded just once in the tournament. But those credentials were put to the test almost immediately.
From the opening whistle, Nigeria seized control. The Eagles dominated possession, pressed aggressively, and pinned Algeria deep in their own half. Victor Osimhen spearheaded the attack with his trademark intensity, flanked by the pace and creativity of Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams. In midfield, Alex Iwobi dictated the tempo, smoothly transitioning play from defence to attack.
Nigeria’s dominance was evident in the first half, as clear chances came and went. Akor Adams found himself through on goal but failed to convert, while another effort was dramatically cleared off the line as Algeria clung on.
The resistance finally broke shortly after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Victor Osimhen rose highest to thunder home a powerful header, giving Nigeria a deserved lead in the 47th minute.
The goal only strengthened Nigeria’s grip on the match. The Eagles continued to push forward with confidence, and their pressure paid off once again when Akor Adams doubled the advantage, finishing calmly after a well-timed assist from Osimhen.
Algeria attempted to mount a comeback with a series of substitutions, but Nigeria’s defensive organisation and game management ensured there would be no late drama. The Super Eagles remained composed and in control until the final whistle.
With the win secured, Nigeria march confidently into the semi-finals, where a high-stakes clash against Morocco awaits on Wednesday night—another opportunity for the Super Eagles to edge closer to their fourth continental glory.
