Paris Saint-Germain edged past Bayern Munich in a staggering nine-goal spectacle at the Parc des Princes, taking a narrow advantage into the second leg of their semi-final of the UEFA Champions League.
But “edged” hardly does justice to a match that swung wildly from start to finish, delivering drama, controversy, and moments of pure brilliance in equal measure.
From the opening whistle, this felt destined to be special. With two of Europe’s most potent attacking sides facing off, the pace was relentless—and the goals came early.
Bayern struck first, with Harry Kane calmly dispatching a penalty after Luis Diaz was brought down in the box. Yet PSG responded with authority. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia lit up the left flank, cutting inside and curling a beautiful effort into the far corner to level things up. Moments later, Joao Neves rose to glance in a header, giving the hosts the lead and sending the home crowd into raptures.
Michael Olise produced a moment of individual magic to haul Bayern back into the game, weaving through defenders before unleashing a powerful finish past Matvey Safonov. At 2–2, it seemed the sides would head into the break level—but controversy struck deep into stoppage time.
A contentious handball decision against Alphonso Davies led to a VAR review, and ultimately a penalty for PSG. Ousmane Dembele stepped up and coolly converted, restoring the hosts’ advantage in dramatic fashion.
If the first half was breathless, the second half was no less intense.
PSG began to assert control, capitalizing on Bayern’s defensive lapses. Kvaratskhelia struck again, finishing off a dangerous delivery from Achraf Hakimi, before Dembele grabbed his second goal at the near post to stretch the lead to three.
At that point, it looked like the tie might be slipping away from Bayern entirely.
To their credit, the German champions refused to fold. Dayot Upamecano pulled one back with a clever flick, and Luis Diaz added another after a superb pass from Kane, reducing the deficit to just one goal and keeping the tie very much alive.
With the second leg set for Munich on Wednesday, 6 May, the stage is perfectly set for another unforgettable encounter. Bayern will believe they can turn it around on home soil, while PSG will know that even the slightest lapse could undo all their hard work.
The winner over the two legs will face Arsenal or Atletico Madrid, who play in Wednesday’s semi-final, in the final in Budapest.
