Canada booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 in dramatic fashion after Stephen Eustaquio scored a stoppage-time winner to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa.
With the match seemingly destined for extra time and potentially penalties, Canada finally found the breakthrough in the 92nd minute. Eustaquio showed composure outside the penalty area, controlling the ball with his chest before firing a clinical half-volley into the far corner beyond South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Despite dominating much of the contest, Canada struggled to break down South Africa’s resilient defence. The visitors produced a series of heroic moments at the back, including Aubrey Modiba’s goal-line clearance to deny Moise Bombito’s powerful header and Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s perfectly timed tackle to prevent Jonathan David from converting into an open goal.
Canada also appealed for a penalty just before half-time after Richie Laryea went down following a challenge from Khuliso Mudau inside the box. However, after a VAR review, the referee upheld the original decision and play continued.
The victory marks another milestone in Canada’s remarkable World Cup campaign. After ending their winless record at the tournament with a commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar on 18 June, Jesse Marsch’s side has continued its impressive run by becoming the first nation to secure a place in the Round of 16.
Canada will now turn its attention to the Round of 16, where it is set to face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on Saturday, 4 July, as the co-hosts continue their dream World Cup journey.
