England narrowly avoided one of the greatest upsets in their World Cup history as captain Harry Kane struck twice late on to inspire a dramatic comeback victory over DR Congo in Atlanta, to secure a place in the last 16.
The Three Lions were stunned just seven minutes into the match when Brian Cipenga fired DR Congo ahead in what was the African nation’s first-ever World Cup knockout fixture. England struggled to find their rhythm, while DR Congo defended resolutely and looked on course for a famous victory.
England created chances but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who produced a series of remarkable saves to frustrate Thomas Tuchel’s side. DR Congo also came close to extending their lead before the break, but Yoane Wissa struck the post with the goal at his mercy, leaving England with a lifeline.
As the clock ticked down, England appeared destined for an embarrassing exit. However, their talisman Harry Kane once again delivered when it mattered most.
With 15 minutes remaining, substitute Anthony Gordon whipped in an inviting cross that Kane met with a superb header to level the score and breathe life back into England’s campaign.
The England captain wasn’t finished there. Four minutes from time, Kane collected the ball on the edge of the area, spun away from his marker, drove forward and unleashed a thunderous right-footed strike into the top corner beyond the helpless Mpasi, completing a remarkable turnaround.
The brace also saw Kane surpass football legend Pelé with his 13th World Cup goal, adding another milestone to his illustrious international career.
England will now travel to face co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in the last 16 on Monday.
