Portugal booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 in dramatic fashion, with Gonçalo Ramos scoring a stunning 94th-minute winner to seal a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Croatia.
In a match packed with drama, controversy, and late twists, Cristiano Ronaldo finally opened his World Cup knockout-stage scoring account, while Ramos emerged as Portugal’s unlikely hero when it mattered most.
Despite Portugal dominating possession in the opening half, it was Croatia who struck first after the break. Just eight minutes into the second half, Ivan Perišić capitalised on a loose clearance from Rúben Dias, firing emphatically into the corner to hand Croatia the lead.
Croatia thought they had doubled their advantage moments later when substitute Igor Matanović found the net with a clinical near-post finish. However, the assistant referee’s flag denied the goal, with Nikola Vlašić adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.
Portugal responded with urgency. Rafael Leão came agonisingly close to equalising after curling an effort against the crossbar, while Ronaldo saw a delicate chipped finish ruled out for a marginal offside.
The breakthrough eventually came from the penalty spot. Just as Ronaldo appeared set to be substituted, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) spotted a foul on Renato Veiga during a corner, awarding Portugal a crucial penalty. Ronaldo made no mistake, calmly converting to level the score and register his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match.
Croatia refused to back down and continued to threaten. Mateo Kovačić forced Diogo Costa into two excellent saves before Matanović was denied in a one-on-one opportunity. Petar Sučić also thought he had restored Croatia’s lead after finishing a superb through ball from Kovačić, but the offside flag once again cut the celebrations short.
Ronaldo was visibly frustrated when substituted in the 81st minute, while both Renato Veiga and Mario Pašalić squandered golden headed chances as the game entered its closing stages.
With extra time looming, Portugal delivered one final moment of brilliance. Deep into stoppage time, Rafael Leão produced a superb cross into the box, where Gonçalo Ramos rose above two Croatian defenders to power home a dramatic header, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Portuguese players and supporters.
Croatia believed they had snatched an equaliser in the 103rd minute of stoppage time when Joško Gvardiol bundled the ball into the net. However, VAR intervened once again, ruling the goal out for offside after replays showed the slightest touch from Matanović diverted the ball to the offside-positioned Mario Pašalić before Gvardiol finished.
The dramatic victory sends Portugal into the Round of 16, where they will face reigning European champions Spain at Dallas Stadium, Texas, on Monday, 6 July, in what promises to be one of the tournament’s standout clashes.
