Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a composed 1-0 victory over Ghana, thanks to Jhon Arias’ first-half strike in a dominant display under the sweltering Kansas City heat.
The South Americans controlled the contest from start to finish, while Ghana endured another frustrating evening in front of goal. The Black Stars failed to register a single shot on target, ending their World Cup campaign with just four attempts on target across four matches. Only Iraq recorded fewer throughout the tournament. In contrast, Colombia managed twice as many shots on target in this match alone as Ghana produced during their entire campaign.
Ghana made a bright start, with Thomas Partey coming closest to breaking the deadlock inside the opening minute when his long-range effort flashed narrowly wide of the post.
The opening stages were disrupted by injuries to both sides. Colombia lost striker Jhon Cordoba to a groin problem after just 10 minutes, forcing Luis Suarez into the action. Moments later, Ghana suffered a setback of their own as right-back Marvin Senaya limped off with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Alidu Seidu.
Colombia quickly capitalized on the disruption. In the 14th minute, Suarez surged down the right flank before delivering a precise cross to the far post, where the unmarked Jhon Arias calmly volleyed home. Seidu was caught out defensively, failing to track Arias’ run, allowing the Colombian midfielder to score what proved to be the winning goal.
Ghana gradually settled into the game but struggled to create meaningful opportunities. Antoine Semenyo saw a deflected effort sail over the crossbar, summing up another disappointing attacking performance as the Manchester City forward finished the tournament without a shot on target.
Colombia continued to threaten before the interval. Luis Diaz dragged a low effort just wide with only goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi to beat, while Suarez headed off target from Jefferson Lerma’s inviting cross. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Zigi produced an excellent save to keep Ghana in the contest, clawing Johan Mojica’s powerful header away from the goal line after another dangerous delivery from Daniel Munoz.
After the break, Colombia maintained complete control despite replacing captain James Rodriguez at halftime during his 130th international appearance. Substitute Richard Rios nearly doubled the lead moments after entering the match, while Gustavo Puerta forced another outstanding save from Zigi.
Diaz thought he had sealed the victory midway through the second half after sliding home Lerma’s cross, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside following a turnover by Partey in midfield.
Ghana pushed forward in the closing stages in search of an equalizer that would have forced extra time, but Colombia’s defence stood firm to secure a deserved victory. The result also meant Ghana became the seventh of the nine African nations to be eliminated in the Round of 32, leaving only Morocco and Egypt to carry the continent’s hopes.
Colombia now turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 7, as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
