Nigeria’s Flamingos have booked their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela in a dramatic quarter-final encounter.
A late penalty converted by Azeezat Oduntan in the 89th minute proved decisive, as the Nigerian youngsters showed resilience and determination to overcome a stubborn Venezuelan side.
The encounter was a closely contested tactical battle between two teams that had produced impressive upsets in the Round of 16. Venezuela entered the quarter-final on the back of a stunning victory over reigning European champions Germany, while Nigeria had eliminated Mexico with a 2-1 win.
The Flamingos enjoyed greater possession and created the more promising scoring opportunities throughout the match. However, they struggled to find a way past Venezuela’s well-organised defence, marshalled by captain Valeria Rebanales.
With the game seemingly heading towards extra time, Nigeria were awarded a crucial penalty in the closing stages. Oduntan stepped up confidently and converted from the spot in the 89th minute to hand the Flamingos a dramatic late lead.
Venezuela threw everything forward in search of an equaliser during stoppage time, but Nigeria’s defence stood firm to preserve their advantage and seal a memorable victory.
The result sends the Flamingos into the semi-finals, where they will face Brazil on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
Brazil secured their place in the last four after coming from behind to defeat China 2-1, setting up an exciting clash with Nigeria for a place in the final.
The achievement marks the second time in four years that the Flamingos have reached the semi-final stage of the competition. Nigeria previously enjoyed a remarkable campaign at the 2022 edition in India, where they finished third to claim the bronze medal.
With another semi-final appearance secured, the Nigerian youngsters will now turn their attention to Brazil as they aim to take another significant step towards lifting the trophy.
