Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has expressed his interest in the vacant Super Eagles coaching job.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Friday declared the position of the Super Eagles head coach vacant, following the expiration of the contract of Jose Peseiro last month.
With the departure of the Portuguese who led the three-time African champions to second place at the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the NFF is now faced with the task of appointing a new coach for the team before their next FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.
According to former BBC reporter Osasu Obayiuwana, Amuneke who won the 1994 AFCON as a Super Eagles player has indicated his interest to lead the national team.
The 1994 African Footballer of the Year was the assistant coach when Nigeria won the FIFA U-17 World Cup trophy for a record fourth time in the United Arab Emirates in 2013. And in 2015, he led Nigeria to win a fifth U-17 World Cup title in Chile.
In 2018, Amuneke was appointed Tanzania head coach and qualified them for their first AFCON since 1980. However, he left by mutual consent after failing to progress to the knock-out stages of the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, finishing bottom of their group with three defeats.
