Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen have won the German Bundesliga title for the first time in their history.
Leverkusen beat Werder Bremen 5-0 on Sunday to move 16 points clear of Bayern Munich – who have won the last 11 Bundesliga titles – with five games left to play.
Incredibly, Alonso’s side remain undefeated in all competitions and on course for a historic treble. Leverkusen hold a 2-0 advantage over West Ham ahead of Thursday’s Europa League second leg and will face second-division Kaiserslautern in the German cup final.
Leverkusen are the 13th club to win the Bundesliga, and the first new champions of the league since Wolfsburg in 2008-09. The last time Leverkusen won a trophy was on 12 June 1993, when they defeated Hertha Berlin’s second team 1-0 in the German Cup final.
It is an extraordinary accomplishment, a testament to a team in tune with one another, a masterclass on and off the pitch. Remarkable recruitment and quality coaching have combined to provide the platform for these players to ascend to greatness.
Bayer Leverkusen (29) have set a new Bundesliga record for longest unbeaten run from the start of a league campaign. The old record was 28, set by Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in 2013-14.
