Mikel Merino’s extra-time goal sent Spain into the semi-finals of the Euro 2024, after beating hosts Germany 2-1 in their quarterfinal class at Stuttgart Arena on Friday.
After a pulsating first half ended goalless, Dani Olmo gave Spain the lead six minutes into the second half, as he side-footed home a cross from 16-year-old star Lamine Yamal.
Germany eventually equalised in the 89th minute of the game when Florian Wirtz sent a thunderous strike in off the post to send the home fans wild as the game went into extra time.
But with seconds remaining in the thrilling extra 30 minutes, Merino headed home the winner to send Spain into the semi-finals, where they will face France who beat Portugal 5-3 on penalties.
Germany midfielder Toni Kroos, who came out of international retirement earlier this year, has retired from playing entirely now. His final club game was Real Madrid’s Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.
