A late Alexia Putellas wonderful long range free-kick earned world champions Spain a 1-0 win over the Super Falcons of Nigeria in their second Group C game of the women’s football event of the 2024 Olympic games in Paris.
Putellas scored the winning goal in the 85th minute as her freekick sailed over goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and into the net.
It is now back-to-back defeats for the Falcons while the Spaniards have made it two wins from two games.
Falcons coach Randy Waldrum made a few changes with Asisat Oshoala and Esther Okoronkwo starting.
Tonight’s loss puts the Falcons at the bottom of the table with zero points, having lost their first match by 1-0 to Brazil.
Nigeria will lock horns with Japan on Wednesday, July 31. The Japanese bounced back from their defeat to Spain with a 2-1 victory against Brazil earlier on Sunday.
Nigeria could secure automatic qualification if they beat Japan by at least three goals and Spain beat Brazil in the final group game.
