The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) served up some thrilling action in week 8, with key victories across the board and several teams making significant strides in the competition.
Remo Stars climbed back to the top of the table following a narrow 1-0 win over Bendel Insurance in Ikenne on Sunday. Ghanaian forward, Dela Akorki, was the hero of the day, netting the decisive goal just two minutes before halftime, securing a crucial victory for the Ikenne-based side.
Former champions Enyimba, however, stumbled on their visit to Maiduguri, suffering a 1-0 loss against El-Kanemi Warriors. Usman Abass struck late in the first half to hand the home side their first win in five matches, ending a run of four consecutive draws.
In Ijebu Ode, Sunshine Stars triumphed over Nasarawa United at the Dipo Dina Stadium, courtesy of a solitary goal from Olufemi Opeoluwa. The 1-0 victory keeps Sunshine Stars competitive as the season progresses.
At the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa United earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Heartland, with Rabiu Abdullahi scoring the winning goal in the 54th minute to secure the three points.
In Katsina, veteran Nigerian forward Ahmed Musa continued his fine form for Kano Pillars, contributing an assist in their 1-1 draw against Kwara United. Kwara’s Adeshina Gata opened the scoring four minutes after the break, but Musa set up Mohammed Zulkifilu to equalize just before the hour mark. Musa has now recorded three goals and two assists in just four appearances this season, proving instrumental for Sai Masu Gida.
At the Umuahia Township Stadium, Abia Warriors put in a commanding display, dismantling Plateau United 3-1 to return to winning ways. Goals from Sunday Megwo, Adejoh Ojongwa, and Paul Samson secured a comprehensive victory for the home side, while Adamu Abubakar’s lone goal served as little more than consolation for the visitors.
The action continues on Monday with several exciting fixtures to complete week 8. Akwa United will take on Enugu Rangers, Ikorodu City face Lobi Stars, Niger Tornadoes meet Rivers United, and Shooting Stars will square off against Katsina United.
