In a significant government restructuring move, President Bola Tinubu has scrapped the Ministry of Sports Development, previously headed by John Enoh. This decision was announced by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, via his post on X (formerly Twitter).
The announcement came following a meeting between President Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in Abuja. According to Onanuga, the responsibilities of the now-defunct Ministry of Sports Development will be taken over by the National Sports Commission (NSC), which will oversee all sports-related affairs moving forward.
In addition to this, the Niger Delta Ministry has also been dissolved. In its place, a newly formed Ministry of Regional Development will manage all regional development commissions across the country. This includes bodies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), North East Development Commission, and other similar agencies.
The restructuring efforts didn’t stop there. The Federal Executive Council also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. This merger aims to streamline efforts in promoting tourism, cultural heritage, and the creative sector in Nigeria.
These changes are part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to improve government efficiency and enhance the effectiveness of key sectors across the nation.
