Brian Brobbey scored a 94th-minute equaliser as Sunderland rescued a 2-2 draw against Premier League leaders Arsenal, stretching their unbeaten home league record this season to six matches.
The Black Cats have been a joy to watch on their return to the top flight and rose to the challenge of facing a side who had won their past 10 games across all competitions.
Sunderland were rewarded for an impressive first-half display when Arsenal academy graduate Daniel Ballard slammed home Nordi Mukiele’s knockdown to end the Gunners’ remarkable run of eight straight clean sheets.
The Gunners came out stronger in the second half and restored parity when Declan Rice won the ball in midfield and it was worked to Bukayo Saka, who squeezed in a right-foot shot at the near post.
Relentless pressure from the visitors made a second goal almost inevitable, and Leandro Trossard provided it with a pinpoint strike into the top corner from the edge of the box.
However, there was to be another twist to the tale as Brobbey salvaged a point for Sunderland with a late equaliser, beating the onrushing David Raya to the ball with an acrobatic finish.
The result means Arsenal missed the chance to go nine points clear at the summit, while Sunderland remain unbeaten at home, with this point moving them up to third in the table.
