Harvey Barnes double fired Newcastle United to a memorable 2-1 victory against Manchester City in a keenly contested Premier League match.
It is the first time Eddie Howe has won against City in the league, with the Magpies last beating Man City in the Premier League in January 2019.
For 63 minutes, it felt like neither side wanted to score. The first half was littered with chance after chance, but Barnes made the breakthrough. He was slipped through by Bruno Guimaraes before his finish beat Gianluigi Donnarumma through a packed box.
Ruben Dias restored parity for the visitors when his effort took a deflection off Fabian Schar after Newcastle failed to clear their lines from a corner.
But Newcastle showed their own powers of recovery to retake the lead a few minutes later.
Jacob Murphy swung the ball into the box and, although Bruno Guimaraes’ header cannoned off the bar, Barnes was in the right place to hook the ball into the net.
There was a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check for offside, but the goal stood to send St James’ into raptures once more.
Man City miss the chance to go second and a point behind Arsenal, who play Tottenham on Sunday. They remain in third, a point behind Chelsea and four behind the Gunners.
For Newcastle, they are boosted into 14th place on 15 points, four above the relegation places.
