The Super Falcons began their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Indomitable Lionesses on Saturday at the Military Stadium, Yaounde.
In what was their first pre-tournament friendly, Nigeria put up a spirited performance but were undone by a late strike from Mbomezomo Yvana, whose stoppage-time goal sealed victory for the hosts. The encounter served as a crucial tune-up for both sides ahead of next month’s continental showpiece in Morocco.
Head coach Justine Madugu fielded a balanced squad blending fresh talents with seasoned internationals. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade led by example, while Gift Monday spearheaded the attack. There was a special moment for goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor, who made her senior debut, and midfielder Ngozi Okobi marked her return to the starting lineup after a three-year absence.
The Super Falcons, 10-time African champions, started brightly and dominated early proceedings, pinning Cameroon back with sustained pressure. However, despite their control and attacking intent, they struggled to convert chances as the Lionesses’ defence held firm through a tightly contested first half.
After the break, Madugu rang the changes in search of a breakthrough. Folashade Ijamilusi and debutant Precious Christopher were introduced to inject energy into the side, but Nigeria still found it difficult to break down a disciplined Cameroonian backline.
Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Yvana struck in stoppage time, sweeping home the decisive goal and handing the hosts a morale-boosting win.
The result offers valuable lessons for Madugu and his team ahead of their second friendly against Cameroon at the same venue on Tuesday, March 3.
Nigeria will head into WAFCON 2026 as defending champions, drawn in Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt and debutants Malawi. The Super Falcons will open their campaign on March 18 in Casablanca, with more than continental pride at stake — all four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
