Nigerian stars delivered notable performances abroad over the weekend, making their mark in several leagues.
In Turkey, Victor Osimhen found the net as Galatasaray secured a commanding 3-0 victory over rivals Fenerbahçe at RAMs Park on Sunday night. Osimhen opened the scoring five minutes before halftime with a composed finish, bringing his tally to 20 goals in all competitions this season. He nearly grabbed a second in the 53rd minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
In Spain, Umar Sadiq was on target for Valencia CF in their 2-1 victory over Girona FC at the Mestalla. Sadiq doubled Valencia’s lead with a well-placed header from a left-wing cross, marking his fifth goal in 17 appearances this season.
Elsewhere in La Liga, Akor Adams featured for Sevilla FC in their 2-1 loss to CA Osasuna. Adams came on late in the 86th minute and had limited time to influence the match. He has recorded eight goals and three assists in 28 appearances this season. Meanwhile, his compatriot Chidera Ejuke remained an unused substitute.
In Germany, Nathan Tella provided an assist as Bayer Leverkusen claimed a 2-1 away win against FC Köln. Tella set up Patrik Schick for the decisive goal early in the second half. While yet to score this season, Tella has contributed three assists in 16 league appearances.
In England, Taiwo Awoniyi registered an assist in Nottingham Forest’s emphatic 5-0 win over Sunderland AFC. Coming on late in the game, Awoniyi set up a goal just minutes after his introduction, marking his first Premier League assist of the season. His compatriot Ola Aina played the full match.
At Craven Cottage, Nigerian duo Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze featured as Fulham FC edged Aston Villa 1-0. Bassey completed the full 90 minutes, while Chukwueze was substituted late in the game. Alex Iwobi missed the match due to injury.
In women’s football, Esther Okoronkwo starred for AFC Toronto, earning Player of the Match honors in their 3-2 win over Vancouver Rise. She contributed a goal and an assist, first setting up the equalizer before scoring the decisive winner late in the match.
Meanwhile, Chiamaka Nnadozie impressed in goal for Brighton Women, making several crucial saves in their hard-fought 3-2 victory over Manchester City Women.
