Real Madrid have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season by completing the signing of Spanish defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a six-year contract.
The deal is worth an initial £47.5 million, with a further £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons, taking the total package to a potential £51.8 million.
Cucurella leaves Chelsea after four seasons at Stamford Bridge, having joined the London club from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £63 million transfer in 2022. During his time with the Blues, the 27-year-old made 163 appearances and played a key role in the club’s successes, including triumphs in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Spanish international is currently representing Spain at the FIFA World Cup and is preparing for La Roja’s opening Group H fixture against Cape Verde on Monday.
His departure comes after a period of public criticism directed at Chelsea’s leadership. Cucurella openly questioned the club’s transfer strategy and expressed disappointment over the decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year.
The signing marks another significant addition for Real Madrid during what has already been an eventful summer transfer window. New manager Jose Mourinho, who is set to officially begin his tenure at the club next month, has overseen an ambitious recruitment drive.
The Spanish giants have already secured the services of Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, and Bernardo Silva as they look to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are expected to look internally to replace Cucurella. Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, who arrived from Ajax last summer in a £37 million deal, is emerging as a strong candidate to become the club’s first-choice left-back next season. However, the Blues could still explore the transfer market for additional reinforcements in that position before the window closes.
