The United States have booked their place in the World Cup round of 16 after a 2–0 victory over Bosnia, though they will have to face Belgium without Folarin Balogun following his late red card.
Goals from Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman proved decisive, securing progression in front of an energised crowd in Santa Clara.
The atmosphere reached its peak just before half-time when Balogun opened the scoring, giving the hosts a deserved lead heading into the break.
However, the match took a controversial turn in the 62nd minute. Balogun was initially allowed to continue play after a heavy challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemović, but the incident quickly came under VAR review.
Replays showed Balogun’s tackle to be reckless, with his studs raking down Muharemović’s calf before catching and twisting his ankle. Although no immediate punishment was given on the pitch, the referee was later advised to review the footage on the pitch-side monitor. After a closer look, a straight red card was issued.
Despite being reduced to ten men, the USA held firm defensively. They eventually doubled their advantage in the 80th minute when Tillman curled a free-kick over the wall and beyond the reach of Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
With the win secured, attention now turns to a last-16 clash against Belgium in Seattle on Tuesday 7th July—though the USA will be forced to do so without Balogun due to suspension.
