Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Austria in Los Angeles, delivering another composed performance to continue their impressive tournament run.
Despite controlling possession from the outset, Spain found Austria difficult to break down during the opening half hour. They thought they had taken the lead when Marc Cucurella fired home from a partially cleared corner, but the goal was ruled out after Pau Cubarsí was controversially judged to have fouled Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager in the build-up.
Spain finally found the breakthrough just before halftime. Marc Cucurella turned provider with a precise low cross that was calmly finished by Mikel Oyarzabal, giving Luis de la Fuente’s side a deserved advantage heading into the break.
Austria, featuring in their first World Cup knockout match since 1954, showed glimpses of a response after halftime. Substitute Sasa Kalajdžić nearly made an immediate impact, but his header drifted over the bar with his very first touch.
Spain, however, quickly extinguished any hopes of an Austrian comeback. In the 66th minute, Pedro Porro rose at close range to head home Spain’s second goal, putting the result beyond doubt.
The European giants capped off a commanding display in the closing moments. Cucurella and Oyarzabal combined brilliantly once again as the Real Madrid left-back threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into the striker’s path. Oyarzabal made no mistake, sliding home his fourth goal of the tournament to complete a convincing 3-0 victory.
The win means Spain have yet to concede a single goal in their first four matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joining Mexico as the only teams to achieve that feat. It also extends Spain’s remarkable unbeaten run to 34 competitive matches within 90 minutes.
Austria bow out of the tournament with pride after ending a 72-year wait for a World Cup knockout appearance, while Spain march on to a Round of 16 showdown against either Portugal or Croatia on Monday, 6 July, in Dallas.
