Egypt created a new chapter in their football history by defeating Australia on penalties to secure their first-ever World Cup knockout victory, booking a place in the last 16 where they will face either Argentina or Cape Verde.
Playing in their first World Cup knockout match since 1934, Egypt struck first against the run of play at Dallas Stadium. Karim Hafez delivered an inviting cross from the right, and Emam Ashour rose unmarked to head powerfully past Patrick Beach after just 13 minutes.
Ashour’s second goal of the tournament also marked another milestone, taking Egypt’s tally to six goals at this year’s World Cup—more than they managed across their previous three tournament appearances combined in 1934, 1990 and 2018.
Australia responded positively and came close to finding an equaliser before half-time. Their best chance fell to Aziz Behich after a set-piece, but the Melbourne City defender could not find a way past Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
Egypt had a golden opportunity to double their advantage almost immediately after the restart. Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush broke through on goal within 10 seconds of the second half, only to drag his effort wide.
Australia eventually found their breakthrough in fortunate circumstances. Aiden O’Neill’s dangerous free-kick was inadvertently turned into his own net by Mohamed Hany, making the Egyptian defender just the second player in World Cup history to score two own goals in a single tournament.
With neither side able to find a winner during normal time or extra time, the contest was decided from the penalty spot.
The Pharaohs held their nerve in a tense shootout, winning 4-2 after defender Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive penalty. Australia were left heartbroken as Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed to convert from the spot.
While Australia’s World Cup journey comes to an end, Egypt’s historic run continues. The Pharaohs will now travel to Atlanta for a last-16 showdown on Tuesday, 7 July, where they will face either Argentina or Cape Verde.
