Defending champions Argentina were pushed to the absolute limit by World Cup debutants Cape Verde, escaping with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory thanks to a heartbreaking 111th-minute own goal from Diney Borges.
In what will be remembered as one of the most thrilling matches in World Cup history, the tournament holders came within moments of suffering one of the competition’s greatest-ever shocks.
Cape Verde, ranked 64th in the FIFA rankings and the lowest-ranked nation ever to reach the World Cup knockout stages, refused to be overawed by the occasion. Against the reigning world champions, they twice fought back from behind, producing a fearless display that won admiration across the footballing world.
It initially looked like another routine night for Argentina when captain Lionel Messi reminded everyone why he remains one of the game’s greatest players. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner exquisitely controlled a long pass from Lisandro Martínez before lifting a sublime finish into the roof of the net for his 20th World Cup goal.
But Cape Verde had other ideas.
Shortly after the break, Deroy Duarte stunned the favourites by making a perfectly timed run into the penalty area before drilling a powerful finish through the legs of Lisandro Martínez and beyond Emiliano Martínez from a tight angle. As the ball hit the net, jubilant Cape Verde supporters were left in tears of joy, witnessing one of the greatest moments in their nation’s football history.
With the scores locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the tie headed into extra time.
Argentina thought they had finally broken Cape Verde’s resistance when Lisandro Martínez fired home in the 92nd minute to restore their lead. Yet the underdogs refused to surrender.
Just 11 minutes later, Sidny Lopes Cabral produced a goal worthy of any World Cup highlight reel. Cutting inside from the left, he unleashed a magnificent curling strike that sailed over Emiliano Martínez and nestled into the top corner, sending Cape Verde into dreamland once again at 2-2.
As penalties loomed, cruel fortune struck the tournament debutants. In the 111th minute, Cristian Romero’s header took a decisive deflection off Diney Borges and found its way into the net, handing Argentina a dramatic 3-2 victory and breaking Cape Verdean hearts.
Argentina now move on to face Egypt in the last 16 in Atlanta on Tuesday, 7 July. But despite progressing, the headlines belong to Cape Verde.
Representing a nation of just over 600,000 people—roughly a fifth of the population of Buenos Aires—they arrived at the tournament as complete outsiders making their first appearance on football’s biggest stage.
They leave without a place in the quarter-finals, but with something arguably just as valuable: the respect of the footballing world.
Memorable performances against Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and, most remarkably, Argentina have ensured that Cape Verde’s incredible World Cup journey will be remembered long after the final whistle of this tournament.
