England’s hopes of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966 were heartbreakingly ended after a dramatic late comeback from defending champions Argentina secured a 2-1 victory in Atlanta.
The Three Lions looked on course for a famous win after Anthony Gordon gave England the lead early in the second half, putting Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead with just five minutes of normal time remaining.
However, Argentina produced a stunning turnaround in the closing stages, scoring twice in seven unforgettable minutes to snatch victory from England.
Midfielder Enzo Fernández restored parity in the 85th minute with a brilliant long-range strike that left the England defence and goalkeeper helpless. Then, deep into stoppage time, substitute Lautaro Martínez completed the comeback with a decisive 92nd-minute header to send the Argentine supporters into celebration.
England’s collapse came after Tuchel introduced a series of defensive substitutions as his side attempted to protect their narrow advantage. The tactical changes, however, allowed Argentina to gain momentum and dominate the final stages of the match.
The reigning champions grew stronger as the game progressed, with captain Lionel Messi once again proving decisive. The Argentine superstar played a key role in the winning goal, providing the assist for Martínez’s dramatic late strike.
The victory sends Argentina into Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey, where they will face Spain in a highly anticipated showdown between two footballing giants.
Meanwhile, England will have to settle for a third-place play-off against France on Saturday in Miami as their wait for another World Cup final appearance continues.
